Before you begin; to me, it is basically incest.
I am hwen, this is a review, and let's have a talk.
I'm going to admit this right off the bat: I don't hate plots that involve incest in animes, hell you can say that I am interested in plots that involve incest in animes.
[Reports]
Woah, woah, woah, let me explain! The reason I find interest in plots with "Incest" in animes is because incest is
First off: Romantic intentions
Second off: It is a taboo of modern society
I believe that incest can show the truest of romances in animes, it has a jump-start when hitting the emotional pinochle of "True, genuine, love."
However, I have yet to see the taboo addressed, or better yet, I see it addressed, but have it belittled for the sake of comedy.
Remember when I declared Kodonmo No Jikon's episode "Memories" a good episode, the best of the series? Well, it could have been better if the incest taboo was addressed, and then they passed it, declaring the pinnacle of "True love."
Now, why do I bring up my opinion of incest right now? Well, KissXSis belittles "Incest" and why I don't like it.
Now, before we dive into the hate, let's talk about KissXSis, and what its about.
KissXSis is a harem, romantic comedy staring Keita, a middle-schooler (And later a high-schooler) who is the target of love from four women, two of them being his "Sisters" (We're going to discuss this later.)
It has 12 episodes of a series, following Keita's studies till the exams, and a ongoing OVA.
Now, to say the truth, I actually "Like" most of the characters, specifically our main protagonist Keita (Who we will discuss first.)
Keita is the main protagonist, as said above; and I'm going to admit that he is probably one of my favorite protagonist of ANY anime I've seen. The greatest trait I can give him is that of "Genuine"
"Wait... Why is 'Genuine' such a strong trait hwen?" You boldly ask, waiting hopefully a quick death.
Let me explain that I enjoy characters who are in love, you know they are in love, and they aren’t “Assing” around when it comes to love. If you can feel that love, if you can see it, and if you can hear it through their actions, then you know that the character is developed to the pinnacle of “True Love,” the thing what animes stride for. That is why “Genuine” is a trait I seek for in every anime.
Now, this isn’t to say that Keita is “Perfect,” by all means. First off, he falls into the “Unlucky protagonist,” side of the scale, which is a cheap trick, and an uncalled for one at that if said character doesn’t deserve the punishment. I don’t like to see Keita punished, which this anime does often.
Second off, in the OVA’s he is too perverted for what is defined by his start character.
“But hwen, that’s called building upon characters!” You boldly declare.
By all means I accept development, but what we have as our defined character in the first 12 episodes as someone who is attentive to his studies, and lies to himself above his love for his sisters (Well until the climax of the series where he admits his love.)
In the OVA, half of it is divided into the “Middle-school” portion (Where the story takes place) while half of it takes place during the “High-School” portion (Continues onward from comic.)
However, even through the Middle-school portion, it feels like Keima is different from the Series. In the High-School we pretty much get a full on pervert; which makes no sense given that our defined character Keima was “Out of commission.” (As in, time skip) for about a month, not enough time to completely change a portion of Keima’s defined characteristic.
Now, Keima is probably my favorite character in the series despite his awful change in the OVA’s. But, what about the other characters? Well...
Let’s start with the relationships. Keima throughout the series has four romantic relations, and one platonic relation with females. You might say that Keima has a “Tetrahedral relationship,” which my god, I’ve been waiting for forever, being that I love tetrahedral relationships (One male, four females.)
[Hwen gives an automatic point to the tetrahedral relationship.]
Now, surprising his “Romantic” relationships are two sets of sisters.
The first set are his sisters Ako and Riko. Cute,?
Yes, however, in the 12 episodes they suck, they are awful. They are bland; one is perfect the other is not... BORING.
However, I must admit that in the OVA they do get better characteristics, as you learn Ako is a closet pervert, while Riko, surprisingly is more leveled headed in the erotic department (But not by much.)
Consider it like a business-women, and a hippie; that’s the best way to describe them.
Other then that; I’m going to say this alot, but they have good chemistry together, at-least for the OVA portion. When they are alone on stage, they work well off one another.
They just don’t work with the other heroines well, and even at times, not even with Keima (They get better in the OVA though.)
Speaking on the other Heroines, our next set is Teacher Yūzuki, and her little sister
Mikazuki. They don’t well together, Mikazuki doesn’t work well with Keima, but hell... Dammit, Yuzuki senpai is my favorite of the harem. Why? Because take a seat “My Girlfriend is the President,” Yuzuki senpai is how you do an otaku! She is nervous, bashful, anti-social and obsessive! Obsessive of erotic games and samurai, which works strangely well. She isn’t perfect, but that’s what I wanted to see.
Also, she works well with out protagonist the one episode the romance is “Built” between the two in the OVA; other then that, uh, the romance is pretty closeted. I hope to see more when the OVA’s continue.
Now that the heroines have been discussed... Oh, god, now we have to discuss Miharu. I’m going to make this short and sweet. She’s shy, and she has a bladder problem. Whoever made this manga, and transferred it to anime form has a pee fetish..
*Throws up*
Oh, god, I hate her.
Now, um, what else. The parents are bad? I don’t like their openess to the love of Keima, but they work together.
Keima’s three friends are bad? I don’t like them with there interactions with Ako, and Riko, but they work well with the short time they spend together.
That’s what this anime is lacking, which is sad. The characters work together in there small circles of fellow characters (The exception being Yuzuki and Mikazuki), but they don’t work when interacting with people outside there circles. The OVA’s fix it, but, not by much; and this is my biggest problem with the anime, I mean other then the jump over of the incest....
Speaking of that, time to discuss “Why Hwen doesn’t like the incest in KissXSis.”
It’s simple, I stated it above. THEY BELIITLED THE GOD DAMN INCEST. Why? Is it because they want ‘comedy’ when relationship can be solidified from dealing with the Taboo?
I’m serious, other then Keima’s shallow words against the romance of Ako and Riko, we get about 4 god damn minutes of the taboo discussed, only for it to be ignored in the rest of the series. Wait, sorry, we get 8 minutes, the other 4 being one episode with Yuzuki, where then the concept is shot down when Riko declares they aren’t “Blood related.”
They aren’t yes, but you been together since god damn childhood, you are pretty much sisters and brothers! That is why I hate this anime, because the only reason they aren’t blood related, is because they don’t want to DEAL with the taboo. Which... SICKENS ME..
So, yeah, Episodes 1-12 suck as-well... They are funny at times, but at other times they are just boring (Mind you, not love-ru boring.) and forgettable. It’s borderline hen-tei
The OVA episodes are better, but that’s due to... Certain scenes that take up more run time, and also because of the smaller circle of characters interacting. No, you don’t understand. If the episodes are borderline hen-tei, the OVA’s are basically hen-tei.
Music is alright, basic “Tell what we’re about,” opening; OVA’s better because the title cards change, which is a nice edition.
Animation is “My Bride’s a Mermaid,” quality; which I find charm in. It’s nice, and not distracting like certain other animes... *Cough,Cough,GXPandGirlsBravo, cough, cough*
Comedy is meh, mostly erotic comedy, which requires a taste.
Which sums things up. So, um, should you watch “KissXSis,” and learn about the relationships?
Short answer: No
Long answer: Noooooooooooooooo
It’s not the worst anime, better then the mean spirits of Love Ru, or the horrible protagonist of Love Ru and School Days; but, lost of definition of your main character is bad, especially if 18 episodes have passed! Not only that, but bland opening characters; erotic comedy, weak relations (For the series) ruins the taste in your mouth fast. Not to the point of garbage, but to the point of fowl mouth.
7/10
