Gregory's Horror Show

To kick off the month of frights, the nights of horror is here with Gregory's Horror Show; a unique *Anime* that has never graced the states.
Now, how does Gregory's Horror Show hold up?
Well...

Gregory's Horror Show is a horror-comedy staring a man, then a women, as they progress through the episodes dealing with all sorts of issues, which end up giving them a moral lesson, which is some-times well played, and other times not (Though we'll discuss that when we get there.)
Horror and comedy ensue as there mental states decline, and more problems begin to add up!

Now, I won't discuss the characters as I usually do, except for a mention of two specific. First, mind that the main characters are suppose to represent you; fitting that even they are in the first person camera (Will be discussed further when we arrive at the animation). Second, Gregory, the keeper of Gregory's Boarding House (The location where the show takes place) isn't an antagonist, rather then the mental conscious, and speaker for said conscious in the show. Which, I must admit is surprising, though not exactly known till the end of specifically season one.

Now, the reason I didn't discuss the "Side characters," is because they represent specific dilemmas of modern society; such as quick second choices, regretting choices of the past, the sucking of modern days pressures... Which, man, was done actually really well.
I was going to state, "Man, they were so up front and preachy about the morals!" and mind you, certain ones ARE exaggerated as hell, however, those aren't really the lessons that should be focused on.
You could say the morals "Preached" could have distracted the audience from the subtle morals that one thinks of when looking back at the show.
If this is the case, my entire opinion shifted from an "Eh" to "My god this is genius," in the course of the writing of this article (I'm not kidding)

Through that, however, my opinion on the plot hasn't changed much. You don't watch Gregory's Horror Show for the plot; virtually it has no plot besides the internal and external conflicts the protagonist has throughout the show, which I would put in the "Moral" category rather then this.
I certainly doubt they could have had a decent plot outside of the one through the morals suggested, seeing how every episode is only two minutes.

Yes, two minutes; which is both an appeal and a down-side to myself. An appeal, since most episodes surprisingly work well in that time frame, and "Cut the filler."
It shows us what it wants, then we react to it. It can be very memorable when it comes to it, however, sometimes it isn't.

Some episodes do seem a-bit preachy, and a-bit dragged on (In two minutes... Really!?), and as suggested in the discussion of plot; one cannot really be well established outside the conflicts of the protagonist, and the morals suggested. Also, well, you can't really build up suspense...

Now, my biggest problem with Gregory's Horror Show is definitely the "Horror" as it attempts to pull Jump scares with little or no suspense, which, if you've ever played Five Nights at Freddy, will know is just silly. You need time to build the jump scares, something this show doesn't have (Since IT IS two minutes)
Really, the only horror to me come from the physiological treatment that comes from *some* scenes. However, those are few and far between and aren't really scary, but rather chilling.
Another problem I have (Though not as dominating as the horror) is the comedy. It is lack-luster, focusing on lame gags that dumb down the horror, and silly weird looking characters that are outter-worldly rather then strange. So, comedy enhances the horror rather then makes you laugh.
And again, let me remind you, only two minutes; so cause effect comedy is basically gone, replaced with outter-worldly characters (As said) and dialogue to suggest at the moral.

Though the horror and comedy are lack-luster, what really shines is the unique animation style presented in the *Anime*.
I say anime because, though it is of Japan, it is CGI. However, it is awesome CGI; it is in the style of paper-mache with the protagonist taking place in a first person view, which really enhances the horror in the best of qualities, and put YOU in the shoes.

Over-all, I enjoyed Gregory's Horror Show. It is strange, however it has a really unique style that I enjoyed very much. Though the comedy and horror were lack-luster, the morals and *mostly* memorable characters, and the protagonists' motives really, really do there best to cover it as an almost dramatic horror rather then comedic horror.
So, yes, I do recommend it; even so much to wonder "Why isn't this in the states!?"
I could honestly see this as a commercial break 2 minute filler, one episode a week, on Tsunami. So, uh, please do that.

7.5/10
